Self Defense Techniques
Against Long Pole ("Bo") Attacks

Self defense techniques against long pole attacks are part of Karate as a martial art. However, as not many people are carrying long poles with them, this type of attack is seldom experienced.

But a fighter has to expect the unexpected, right? :-)

Just for the love to your martial art, you may want to learn and practice these techniques.

First Situation

Your opponent tries to strike you to the head with a long pole or broom stick [I must say here... don't annoy your building cleaner!]. ;-)

HOW TO DEFEND: First, step to the side quickly to dodge the blow.

Your opponent will bring his arm back to try and hit you again.

This time deliver a well aimed kick with your foot to his arm pits.

That will sap his strength. At the same time, throw a punch to his face.

Second Situation

In this self defense technique drill, your opponent attempts to smash you on the head with a long rod... a heavy one!

HOW TO DEFEND: First, step inside and thwart the blow with your left hand.

That will throw your opponent off balance temporarily.

Next, follow through with a smashing punch to the face.

Third Situation

Your assailant attempts to smash your legs with a long pole.

HOW TO DEFEND: Jump up to dodge the blow.

At the same time, send a swift kick to your foe's face; then punch away at him.

Fourth Situation

In this situational self defense drill, your opponent has a long pole and tries to jab at your face and chest with it.

HOW TO DEFEND: Quickly dodge to the inside, grasp pole with both hands, then quickly deliver a kick to opponent's solar plexus.
